Orthodontic emergencies are rare, but if you’re feeling severe discomfort, please call 253-625-1668. For a dental emergency such as trauma to a tooth, call 911 and go to an emergency room.
Even though they may not be true emergencies, you may develop urgent situations with your orthodontics including:
- broken or loosened appliances
- popped-off brackets
- loose brackets or bands
- wire irritations
- severe discomfort
If you have an urgent situation, call us during business hours to arrange an appointment, and we’ll fit you in our schedule as soon as possible. Please don’t just come by our office. It is better to call first.
If part of your orthodontics are poking into your mouth, use dental wax or a cotton ball to cover the area. You can try moving protruding wires with a cotton swab or a pencil eraser.
If you need to cut a wire yourself before we can see you, wash a set of fingernail clippers and sterilize it with rubbing alcohol. Then use the fingernail clippers to cut the wire.
Over-the-counter pain medicines such as aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol), or ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, etc.) can be useful to relieve soreness. The discomfort should pass soon enough, but feel free to give us a call if your soreness is severe.
