One of the main questions we get about orthodontic treatment is how long the treatment lasts. Generally speaking, the time it takes to straighten teeth and align bites can take from a year and a half (18 months) to up to 3 years. For each patient’s individual situation, we can typically predict a narrower window. Treatment time ultimately depends on several factors, including the severity of the problems, the age of the patient, the type of braces the patient wishes to use, oral hygiene during the treatment period, and the patient’s following through with any instructions.
During your treatment period, you will need to come in for periodic appointments. These appointments are so we can tighten wires, make adjustments, or simply to make sure everything is progressing according to plan. Depending on your personal treatment plan, we might ask you to come in every month, or it could be as long as every three months.
We are aware that patients have busy lives, and we aim to be flexible and accommodating in our scheduling. By the same token, we ask that patients arrive on time for their appointments so our daily schedule can run efficiently for everyone, and if an appointment must be canceled, we ask for at least 24-hours’ notice.
Once you have decided to begin treatment, we will schedule a date to put on your braces or give you your first Invisalign trays. But before this appointment, we ask you to see a general dentist for an exam and so any cavities can be filled. Also during treatment, we ask that you see your general dentist for an examination and teeth cleaning every six months. A bi-annual teeth cleaning will help prevent tooth decay and ensure a healthy smile once your braces are removed.
Of course, if you have any questions about anything relating to your treatment, feel free to ask us during an appointment or to call us at any time during office hours.
